Description

Kane Williamson is facing a two-week period to demonstrate his fitness for the upcoming ODI World Cup, as he has joined the New Zealand squad in England to continue his recovery from an ACL injury sustained during the IPL.

Initially, when Williamson got injured in April, his chances of participating in the World Cup were quite slim. Nevertheless, his recent progress has been encouraging, prompting the team management to give him ample opportunity to prove his readiness.

The deadline for submitting the 15-player squads to the ICC is September 5, with the option to make changes until September 28 without requiring approval. New Zealand's head coach, Gary Stead, expressed the team's intention to provide Williamson with the fullest possible time frame for his recovery. Stead stated, "We're going to provide him every available chance and make use of that entire duration. He's fully engaged in his rehabilitation process, and it's great to see him back in the nets practicing his batting. He's making significant strides, but there's still a considerable amount of work ahead to ensure he reaches the necessary condition."

There's a scenario where Williamson might be included in the squad even if he won't be match-fit for the initial matches of the World Cup. Alternatively, he could be designated as one of the backup players on the travel roster, but that would necessitate an injury within the original squad to make way for his inclusion. The team's decision-making also factors in long-term considerations.

Stead stated, that they are currently evaluating all these factors. It's conceivable that even if Kane's name is on the roster, he might not be fully available at the tournament's outset. There's also a chance that he might be ready, or he might not be. It's still a bit speculative as to where he will stand. He also stated that naturally, the Board desire to have him participate in the World Cup, but they're mindful of his broader career prospects. He also stated that there will be candid discussions between Kane and him to accurately assess his condition. This way, theyt can arrive at the best outcome for both their team and Kane Williamson's sustained career.
